Sonos Playbase: The Perfect Speaker for TVs with Stands

Did you know that only 30% of TVs are wall mounted rather than placed on a stand or a piece of furniture.

TV stands can interfere with speaker placement, and as a result Sonos has developed a new speaker system specifically designed to both provide incredible audio and accommodate TVs on stands: the mighty Sonos PLAYBASE speaker.

The PLAYBASE speaker is very similar in function to the highly popular Sonos PLAYBAR released in 2013, which consists of a set of flat speakers that are placed underneath a TV for high-quality audio for TV shows, films and music.

The difference between the PLAYBASE and the PLAYBAR is that while the PLAYBAR is designed to sit beneath a TV, the PLAYBASE features a robust body on which a freestanding TV can be sat.

This means that you can get that incredible Sonos sound even if you don’t have the room or setup for a Sonos PLAYBAR.

The PLAYBASE supports TVs that weigh up to 75 pounds, and is suitable for use with both TVs with centre stands  and those with legs on the side.

As with other Sonos speakers, you can connect the PLAYBASE to the Internet to access various music streaming services such as Spotify, and it can connect with other speakers to create a full surround system.

Another notable feature also found in other Sonos speakers is its ability to be controlled via voice controls through Amazon’s intelligent personal assistant Alexa, although this feature will not be available at launch and will be added to the speaker later in the year.

Speaking about the PLAYBASE in a press release, Sonos CEO Patrick Spence said:

“When we think about what product we’ll invent next, we think first about the home, and the role each of our products play in the home. What we realized is that PLAYBAR only met the need of the small percentage of homes where people mount their televisions on the wall.”

The Sonos PLAYBASE goes on sale in April and will be available in black and white.
