Story to Sound- An Interview with Nathan from Spin 103.8

This year Harvey Norman is celebrating sound with the Freedom of Wireless – headphones and speakers that let you escape from the tangle of cables.

We’ve teamed up with Spin 103.8 to bring you more on Sound Redefined throughout December, from the top DJs on Zoo Crew and Fully Charged.

Today we’re chatting to Nathan O’Reilly, one half of the dynamic duo known as the Zoo Crew. Together with Graham O’Toole, he’s on Spin 103.8 weeknights from 6.45pm. Here’s Nathan’s Story to Sound.

What is the first album you ever bought?
The first album I bought was Linkin Park Hybrid Theory. I regret nothing.

What’s your most played song right now on iTunes/Spotify?
The most played song on my Spotify at the moment is One Direction- Infinity.  Harry Styles’ vocals make me feel alive.

Name your favourite and least favourite song in the charts right now?
My favourite song right now is DJ Snake and Justin Bieber- Let Me Love You and my least favourite song is Little Mix- Shout Out to My Ex.

What do you think is the best way to listen to music, at home, on the radio, live etc and why?
Personally I think you can’t beat listening to music at a gig. There’s no better feeling than singing your favourite song with thousands of people around you.  Coldplay’s Viva la Vida gig is the best concert I’ve been to so far.

Wireless audio gives you the freedom to dance, what’s your go to dance move?
I’ve been prone to crack out the robot. Normally happens at the end of the night.

Wireless headphones are great for the gym or running, do you listen to music while you exercise? If so do you have a go-to motivational song/playlist and what’s on it?
I have to listen to music when I go to the gym. I listen to a lot of Drake and Kanye West to pump me up.

What headphones do you use and why do you like them?
I use Sennheiser plug in headphones. I like them because they don’t fall out of my ears when I exercise.

What speakers do have at home and why do you like them?
Unfortunately I don’t own speakers at the moment but it could be on my Santa’s list.

What’s your favourite audio product from Harvey Norman Audio range?
I really love the Beats by Dre Headphones. I’ve always wanted a pair. Love how they look and I’ve been told the sound quality is amazing.

What was your first ever job in the radio industry and how did you get it?
My first job in radio was presenting a Sunday night show (10:45pm-12:45am). It was called ‘The Long and Short of It’ and it was a lot fun. Myself and Graham (my co presenter) used to do a show on an online digital station called FRQ and the Programme Director of Spin at the time listened to our show and gave us a chance and the rest is history.

What makes a presenter stand out in the industry today?
I think someone who is themselves and who brings their own unique sense of humour and style. It can be a tough industry to get into but if you’re passionate and are willing to put in the hard work then you have a good chance of doing well.

What advice would you give to people trying to get into radio presenting or production?
I would tell them that they have to really want to do it. A lot of people like the idea of presenting but are not willing to put in the work. You have to accept that at the beginning you’re going to have to do shows for free, everyone has to do it! Keep the head down and create great content and then you have a good chance of getting noticed.
