GoPro’s virtual reality rig produces stunning videos

Virtual reality videos are the future and GoPro wants to be a part of what could be a booming industry. It unveiled a new camera rig called Odyssey, which will be available in November.

Odyssey was developed in partnership with Google. The rig is made up of 16 GoPro cameras, which are connected together, along with a dedicated microphone. It’s essentially everything that you need to make virtual reality videos.

And what it can do is pretty stunning. GoPro released a video of New York City, which can be watched in 4K resolution. It becomes even more impressive if you watch it through YouTube’s mobile app. This lets you look around by just moving your phone around. And you can even pause the video and look around the scene you’ve paused.

Progressive technology comes with a price tag. Odyssey will have a price tag of $15,000 when it’s released in November.

Unfortunately for aspiring film makers, GoPro and Google is controlling who will be able to get their hands on the rig. They have encouraged professional filmmakers to apply for access to the rig ahead of its November release.

While Google Maps and Earth allowed us to explore the world from the comfort of our couch, virtual reality videos like this will add a whole new element of immersion. And virtual reality headsets like the Oculus Rift or even Google’s Cardboard will make virtual reality tours all the more realistic.
