Tech and music journalist for Irish Daily Star and Buzz.ie, Mark Kavanagh, shares his review on the Nuu G3 mobile phone that has just hit the Irish market.
Nuu Mobile was initially set up as a partnership between firms based in America and Hong Kong but it now has offices in eight countries including the UK. The company specialises in budget-priced, unlocked Android smartphones such as the G3, which is its flagship.
This sleek and shiny handset has just been introduced to Harvey Norman; where you can buy it outright for €269 and it will work on any network.
Design-wise, the aluminium-framed glass body looks like the Samsung Galaxy S9 – apart from the fact that it has no headphone port. But these days most people use wireless headphones for convenience. The super-slim widescreen display is full HD with an 18:9 aspect ratio, so it’s great for viewing movies and video content.
I was most impressed by the brightness levels on the display which are well above the range of many smartphones. The G3’s rear camera set-up comprises a 13MP main sensor with f/2.0 aperture with a 5MP sensor that adds depth effect and enables you to produce portraits with bokeh effects (background blur). You will get the best results from the lenses in daylight conditions. The selfie camera is quite brilliant; the 13MP shooter provides sharp and accurate captures.
Battery life is as you would expect from a 3000 mAh power pack – a casual user should get a full day but a heavy user like me will need to refuel by late afternoon. It all depends on what you are using the device for. Recharging is a zippy process thanks to the USB-C connection. Nuu’s G3 runs Android 8.0 Oreo which isn’t the latest version of the OS but it is a relatively pure version of Android which is a plus point.
Other notable features include the dual SIM, fingerprint sensor and Android Beam which enables you to send contacts and files such as photos and videos to other Android devices easily.
On the whole, Nuu’s G3 is a welcome value-for-money addition to the Irish market that performs well in everyday use. Shop the full range of Nuu mobile phones now at harveynorman.ie and in Harvey Norman stores nationwide.
