The Oculus Rift is coming! To be released in 2016

After months of speculation, Oculus finally announced a (very broad) release window for the Oculus Rift VR headset. The consumer version of the headset will ship to buyers in Q1 2016.

For consumers, the Rift will give us a whole new way to interact with entertainment media. One of the focal points to date has been its value for gamers. The headset will immerse players in game worlds like never before as it literally puts players in the boots of their chosen character. With graphics at the stage that they are now and the Rift’s 3D positional audio, you will feel like you’re in the world.

It will also let audiences enjoy movies from a particular viewpoint or character. Groups could experience a single story from different perspectives, for example, each having a different experience to compare.

As Oculus is owned by Facebook, the Oculus Rift could dramatically change how we communicate with one another. Messenger may be about to get a whole new set of features.

Oculus isn’t dealing in specifics just yet. The headset will be available to pre-order later this year, but we still don’t know a price. Oculus’ co-founders have said in the past that they’d like it to retail for between $200 and $400. Oculus VR Vice President Nate Mitchell has said that it will cost more than $200, but significantly less than $1,000. That’s quite the window to work with.

There are exciting times ahead. Having had hands-on time with various models of the Rift, we can say that the technology and possibilities are quite exciting. Oculus will show off more at E3 2015, which takes place in June.

Stay tuned for more information about the Oculus Rift. When we have any information about pre-ordering the Oculus Rift at Harvey Norman, you’ll be the first to know.

In Short: Oculus finally announced when the Rift VR headset will be released to consumers. It’s due out in Q1 2016 and will be available to pre-order later this year.
