It looks like Samsung is gearing up to unveil a brand new smartwatch, one that has close ties to the company’s extremely popular ‘Galaxy’ line of smartphones.
An official trademark filing with the Korean Intellectual Property Office for a device known as the ‘Galaxy Watch’ was recently spotted online by numerous publications, which corroborates previous rumours that the successor to the Samsung Gear S3 smartwatch (seen above) would feature a new name.
These rumours also suggested that the Galaxy Watch will run on Wear OS as opposed to Samsung’s Tizen operating system, and that the as yet unannounced smartwatch would feature support for an upgraded version of Samsung’s intelligent assistant, Bixby.
Smartphone insiders believe Samsung will unveil Bixby 2.0 at its upcoming Galaxy Unpacked event on August 9th, in addition to the Galaxy Watch and the highly anticipated Galaxy Note 9 smartphone.

Tipsters are suggesting that Galaxy Watch will come preloaded with Bixby 2.0, and that users will be able to activate the intelligent assistant either by holding down the home button or through the ‘Hi Bixby’ voice command.
Samsung’s line of Gear smartwatches have generally received rave reviews upon release but have failed to capture the general public’s attention the way other smartwatches like the Apple Watch 3 have, hence the renaming.
It’s probable that Samsung believes that associating its smartwatches with its ever-popular line of Galaxy smartphones will spread awareness and increase sales.
We’ll have to wait until August’s Galaxy Unpacked event for the official debut of the Samsung Galaxy Watch, but we’ll let you know as soon as it does.
