At their Spring Forward event, everyone was expecting Apple to focus solely on their all new Watch wearable, but they had a big surprise in store. Say hello to the all New MacBook.
The New MacBook is a total reinvention of the notebook, a device which has been redesigned and reengineered to be one of the thinnest and lightest devices in its class ever built. And the magical sorts at Apple have managed to pull it off – creating a laptop which measures just 13.1mm and weighs less than 1kg.
That’s almost impossibly light, especially across the full width of the device, and makes for quite the first impression when you pick up. Incredibly, Apple has managed to pack in not only a 12 inch screen but it’s also a full Retina display, and the thinnest panel they’ve ever created. That’s on top of an innovative full-size keyboard which is responsive and slimline and an updated trackpad which recognises pressure and gives you physical feedback.
The design philosophy is all about creating something that’s stunning to look at and also highly functional. The New MacBook users a highly efficient central processor which generates next to no heat – meaning this is also the first MacBook to come without any fans. That means it’s practically silent in use, but still manages to push out pixels to fill that glorious 16:10 2304 x 1440 display.
The more efficient processor also has another great advantage on the battery life. Despite its slim lines, you can expect the New MacBook to keep going on and on, for up to 9 hours of full online web use and 10 hours of video playback.
Another innovation which comes from the demand for a slimmer form is the new USB-C port. This emerging technology is all about providing ports with multiple functions, and Apple has gone all out. The USB-C is less than third the size of standard USB ports and yet can be used for fast charging your laptop, outputting video to another screen and for fast data transfer over USB 3.1. The cables are reversible (so you’ll never put them in the wrong way again) and an adaptor is available from Apple to allow you to use multiple devices at once.
Expect to hear a lot more about the USB-C technology in the future, as companies start to come up with innovative ways to use the same ports and cables for multiple uses. And, as always, Apple is ahead of the game.
The New MacBook will be available from the 10th of April 2015, with prices to be confirmed. See the list of specifications below.
