Why is it our beds never look quite as inviting as those gracing the scrolling pages of interior blogs and look-books? You know the ones – dreamy gorgeous relaxing beds you want to jump right into and never leave!

EVOKE.ie caught up with Sarah Kenyon, Interior Designer at Harvey Norman to get the insider expert lowdown.

It’s all down to layering, texture and atmosphere apparently. Here’s how its done.

1. Layering

Regardless of your preference in style the key to creating an irresistible bed that you just want to fall into is layers. The bigger the better. Thin lifeless duvets and saggy pillows are never going to be inviting. Be sure your bed is plumped and good enough to dive into.

Even during the summer months using a low tog duvet with bounce can still give the illusion of comfort without causing you to overheat during the night.

Enhance this further by adding a couple of scatter cushions. These will add to the comfort factor whilst also being multifunctional. Use them for extra support whilst enjoying breakfast in bed or a good book during those all to rare duvet days!

2. Texture

Touch and feel are just as important, if not more so, than vision so bare this in mind when shopping for your bed dressing.

Elegant strips and heavy textures can be used to enhance the illusion of size in place of small busy patterns and dark colours that can make a super king bed look like a small double.

Faux fur, heavy knit or velvet effect throws can add a sense of luxury to a bed without overwhelming it. Try to mix the textures on the bed to include light reflecting materials such as satins to further add to that sense of opulence.

3. Atmosphere

There is little point creating a stunningly dressed bed if its environment isn’t fitting. The key to enhancing your bedroom environment is ensuring you’ve a variety of relaxing light levels.

Atmospheric lighting such as lamps and warm lighting from candles are ideal for this. A beautifully scented candle will also help to introduce a deliciously inviting and calming sanctuary from the chaos of the day.
