It’s finally Spring which means more light in the sky, a little less chill in the air and the perfect opportunity for getting your home ready for summer! But it’s not all about cleaning the nooks and crannies which have been neglected all winter, you can also make some small changes around the house which can make a big difference.
Clear and Store and DonateIt’s easy to pick up clutter in life, with odds and ends in every drawer and spilling out into the living spaces. But you don’t have to live like this! Take this new spring as an opportunity for a purge – those stacks of papers or magazines are a good place to start, send them straight to the bin.
Take a moment and consider how often you use the items which are taking up space – everything from pots and pans to ornaments and even smaller items of furniture. If they’re really serving no purpose, get them into storage or for a more permanent solution there are auctions, charity shops or even the great void of a skip.
Add Some ColourThere are many ways to rejuvenate a room, with one of the best being a new coat of paint. But if you haven’t got the time or budget, or you’re limited by rental agreement, that doesn’t mean you’re out of options.
A splash of colour makes a world of difference, especially as the days get longer and brighter. Consider picking up a new rug or blanket and replacing the dreary towels in the bathroom. Create a theme throughout the house or get eccentric with splashes of brightness in every room. It doesn’t take much to make the place feel like new again.
Get MovingWhile we absolutely agree that a new suite would look great in the living room, that’s not always possible. The next best thing is taking a look at the dimensions of your room and the furniture, rolling up your sleeves and changing their position.
You’ll be surprised by the difference it can make – you could find it easier to get around and even let more light into a room. Changing the orientation of your bed can make a huge difference, potentially making things feel less claustrophobic and possibly even helping you get up and out in the morning! And if you want to be adventurous, consider getting rid of an item of furniture you don’t use, or investing in something new to spruce up your space.
Get Creative With StorageYour home may be small but there’s no reason to live with too much clutter. Use every space and angle possible to make the most of what you have. Floor to ceiling shelving is a great way to make every inch useful, and a mixture of open and closed off shelving gives you options for display and storage.
You can also find beds with hidden drawers and stools that double up as storage. And if you’re lucky enough to have an attic, you should absolutely ensure its accessible and make the best use of the extra room. You might even consider cycling out some items that have been hidden away for a time, making the old feel new again.
Let Spring InOne way to brighten up a room for a few days is to get some bouquets of flowers – they look great and the scent permeates the house wonderfully. But they don’t last long and no one likes the look of dead flowers.
Instead, why not bring some potted plants inside. Many varieties are easy to take care of and they’ll not only look gorgeous as they flower but they play a vital role in keeping our air clean and fresh. You could consider them as a project for the kids or go all out and grow your own herbs – basil, chives and parsley all thrive on a window sill. Who doesn’t want fresh ingredients right in their kitchen!?
