Harvey Norman recently had the privilege of sponsoring the Spirit of Youth category at this year’s Spirit of Northern Ireland Awards, which took place at the beautiful Culloden Estate and Spa in Holywood on Friday, 17th June.
The Spirit of Northern Ireland Awards is an annual event that acknowledges inspirational local people from all over Northern Ireland in the following 10 categories:
- Overall Spirit of Northern Ireland Award 2017
- Unsung Hero Award
- Caring Spirit Award
- Charity Champion Award
- 999 Hero Award
- Overcoming Adversity Award
- Spirit of Sport Award
- Spirit of Health Award
- Spirit of Education Award
- Spirit of Youth Award
Harvey Norman had the honour of sponsoring the Spirit of Youth category, which was awarded to Cara McCartan, an amazing seven year old from Newry who acts as the ears and eyes for her parents, both of whom are deaf and dumb.
Cara interprets for her mother and father through sign language, helping them to communicate with the outside world and live normal and fulfilling lives.
Cara saved her mother’s life last December when she noticed that her mother, who suffers from cystic fibrosis and is in need of a lung transplant, was struggling to breath and immediately called the emergency services.
In light of her selfless dedication to assisting her parents, Cara won the Spirit of Youth Category and collected her award from Harvey Norman representatives and Coronation Street actress Lucy Fallon.
Cara also received an invitation for a meet and greet with One Direction singer Niall Horan at the Northern Ireland Open golf tournament at Galgorm Castle in August after he heard her story.
This year’s Spirit of Northern Ireland awards was another humbling event dedicated to recognising incredible people and their contribution to their family, friends and community.
We look forward to next year’s event and hope we will be lucky enough to receive an invitation to sponsor once again.
