Did you know that bed bugs thrive during the summer months? Bed bugs love warm environments and it is during the summer season that most people travel for their holidays, increasing the risk of bringing bed bugs back from the places they have visited. However, there are plenty of things you can do to prevent infestation and keep your home free from bed bugs.
Check Your Surroundings
Like fleas, bed bugs don’t have wings and rely on humans to transport them from place to place. This is why it’s important to always check the bed of any hotel room you stay in for signs of bed bugs. Avoid placing your suitcase on the bed and instead store it away from the furniture in the room.
Lift the mattress and look for adult bed bugs, droppings and cast skins. Check any other pieces of furniture for these signs and pay particular attention to cracked wood and fabric as bed bugs are known to reside in both. If you see any sign of bed bugs change rooms immediately.
Once home wash and dry all your clothes on a high heat setting as this will kill any bed bugs that have followed you home.
Keep Your Home Clean
Bed bugs prefer to be undisturbed, so keep your home clean and free from clutter. Use a protective cover on your mattress to eliminate potential hiding spots. Wash and tumble dry your bed linens and bedding at high heats on a regular basis and vacuum the whole house once a week. It’s also a good idea to replace your bedding, bed linen and mattress toppers at least once a year to keep them fresh and free from critters.
High-risk areas include carpets, rugs, under and around beds, bed frames, bed legs and any cracks in furniture. Remember to dispose of the vacuum bag after every clean. Seal cracks and crevices around the house to prevent movement between rooms through wall voids.
