Sleep Pink Interview – Norah Casey

Publishing entrepreneur Norah Casey is owner and CEO of Harmonia, Ireland’s largest magazine publishing company, printing over four million magazines annually for the Irish, British and US market.

How do you find the right work/rest balance?

I used to imagine that time would run out on me if I didn’t cram as much as much as I could into the day. It was a revelation to discover that I could take time off every now and then without any detriment to the volume of output. It gives everyone around me a bit of a break too.

When you leave the office, can you leave it behind you of does it keep you up at night?

I have no office, I work on the go and it stays with me – my head is always full of all the various projects I’m juggling. When I relax my brain starts whirring away on all the things I still want to do. I think I am the opposite to mindfulness!

How many hours sleep do you get at night?

It varies – sometimes as little as three and other nights I can sleep for six or seven hours. When I am writing I stay at the screen as long as my grey matter will hold. I wake early regardless of when I settle.

How does lack of sleep affect your mood, memory and concentration?

When I did that stint on Newstalk Breakfast and had to get up at 4am every morning I felt like I had jet lag most of the time – I would leave the station at 10.30am and do a full day’s work – either filming or in the business and then try to get to sleep by 10.30 (not always successfully). Sleep deprivation definitely makes it harder for me to think fast and to remember things – bliss I guess for anyone who knows me to see the dial turning more slowly.

How did you get involved in the Marie Keating Foundation?

Have you met Linda Keating? She’s a hard woman to say no to!
