The Touch World Cup gets underway in a few days and Harvey Norman are proud (and delighted) to be sponsoring the participating Irish teams. For those of you guessing just what the Touch World Cup entails and who exactly will be representing Ireland, we’re here to delve a little deeper into the details for you.
The Touch World Cup takes place in Malaysia from April 28th to May 4th and consists of 116 national teams all looking to take home the World Cup trophy. It’s a special tournament for the Harvey Norman family because our very own Davinia Murray is the Irish Team Manager! She says that touch rugby isn’t just for former rugby players, but instead for anyone and everyone who wants to take part in a fun team sport. It was Davinia who encouraged us to sponsor the Irish team, so now the whole company is hoping for a successful tournament, especially our CEO Peter Hearn, seen below presenting Davinia with the new Ireland jersey!
Tania Rosser, a former Irish rugby and netball player, says that she and the other coaches are hoping to get touch rugby into primary schools throughout the country as it offers girls a route to get into sport. The game itself consists of six players per team, with minimal contact allowed and a possession restart after one team has had 6 touches. Other than those rules, regular rugby rules such as try-scoring and lateral passes are part of the game.
Everyone at Harvey Norman wishes the men and women of our Touch Rugby teams all the best at the upcoming World Cup!
