Prepare for a happy and healthy sun-filled summer with these handy diet tips.
These tips will keep your body in tip-top shape and help you to stave off common health issues such as dehydration and upset stomachs.
- Stay Hydrated
It goes without saying but you’d be surprised how many people forget to stay hydrated during the hotter summer months.
Experts recommend 8-10 full glasses of room temperature water a day to ensure your body is fully hydrated during the longer summer days.
- Drink Fresh Juices
If you desire something with a bit of flavour, try drinking (room temperature) fresh juices like orange juice or apple juice instead of cold carbonated drinks, as fresh juices contain lots of beneficial vitamins and nutrients.
While you may feel an inclination for a cold can of coke, drinking extremely chilled drinks in warm weather can actually slow the hydration process so try to avoid ice cold drinks.
- Eat Less and Lighter
It’s a good idea to eat smaller and lighter meals during the summer as it takes longer for food to digest during the warmer summer months.
Salads and seasonal fruits and veg are ideal foods for the summer season and will keep your body fully fuelled from sunrise to sunset.
- Eat Fruit and Veg with a High Water Contents
Aim to eat lots of fruit and veg with a high water content e.g. watermelon and cucumber, as these foods help your body to stay cool and hydrated in hot weather.
Strawberries, grapefruit, peaches, tomatoes, celery and spinach all have a high water content and are perfect summer snacks.
- Avoid Fried Foods
Fried foods and those with a high fat content should be avoided as often as possible during the summer season as they can strain the digestion system leading to a sluggish and sickly feeling.
Such foods can also quickly dehydrate our bodies during hot weather, so try to skip fried and fatty foods if you want to feel as fit as a fiddle all summer long.
