We’re very happy to announce that on Friday, 30th March from 6pm to 8pm we will be hosting our first Autism Friendly Shopping Evening at our Flagship Store in Tallaght, Dublin.
We understand that our customers have different needs and we’re committed to supporting these needs whatever way we can, which is why we’re working towards the long-term goal of developing Autism friendly environments in all our stores across the country.
64% of people with Autism avoid shopping due to the stress it can cause, which not only affects these individuals but also their families and caregivers. With a little effort and understanding we can all help make people with Autism feel comfortable in new environments and encourage the confidence they need to participate in the daily activities most of us take for granted.
We partnered with myAccessHub, Ireland’s leading Autism accessibility and inclusivity advisor, to develop our first Autism friendly environment in our Flagship Store. myAccessHub offers advisory services to businesses about how they can improve autism accessibility in the workplace, in retail, in hospitality and in entertainment.
Some of the tools we’ve implemented for the evening include:
- A calm environment with dimmed lights, quiet music and TV screens switched off or displaying the same channel
- A sensory box filled with items to help all our customers enjoy their shopping experience at Harvey Norman, such as sunglasses, caps, foam shapes and fidget spinners
- Greater staff awareness of our customers’ needs and a dedication to advising and assisting customers to the very best of our abilities
We’ve also included a Sensory Map and Virtual Tour of the Flagship Store in Tallaght, a feature that helps people to familiarise themselves with a location before a visit, enabling them to feel more comfortable when they arrive.
If you have any questions about the Autism Friendly Shopping evening, please contact our Tallaght store directly on 01 468 4500.
Thank you and we look forward to seeing you next Friday.
