When most people think of baking, it’s sweet treats that you know you shouldn’t overindulge in that come to mind. But it doesn’t have to be that way.
You can certainly enjoy baked goods, including sweet treats, without feeling guilty by making just a few small changes. Don’t worry; you don’t have to sacrifice any taste, texture, or aesthetics in the process.
One of the simplest changes you can make is to use wholegrain flour instead of white. Wholegrain flour features more fibre and vitamins, including folate, riboflavin and vitamins B-1, B-3 and B-5. As a result, whole grains can help reduce the risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and obesity.
If you’re a fan of brownies, you’ll be glad to hear that you don’t have to give them up completely. Researchers from Idaho State University put brownies made with tofu, replacing half the fat of a chosen brownie recipe, to a taste test.
They found that eight out of ten enjoyed the brownie, with study author Linda Rankin explaining that “It has a neutral taste, so the chocolate flavour still shines through.” And with its high protein and calcium, it is a fine choice for those who want to enjoy themselves while eating healthily.
The British Heart Foundation has also weighed in on ways to make your bakes healthier. One of its recommendations is to use an unsaturated spread, as long as it’s suitable for baking, instead of butter. Not only does it reduce the amount of saturated fat in what you make, but it can also give your goods a lighter texture.
Why not take a look at one of your favourite recipes, or take inspiration from Catherine Fulvio and Whirlpool, make a few easy adjustments, and whip up a delicious treat with a healthy kick?
