Why do we eat pancakes on Pancake Tuesday?

Let’s face it; if somebody says that a particular day is a day dedicated to feasting on delicious treats, you’re not going to ask too many questions. But have you ever wondered why we eat pancakes on Pancake Tuesday?

Pancake Tuesday or Shrove Tuesday is the last day before the period that Christians call Lent. Traditionally, Lent is a time of giving things up. In the past, Christians had to give up certain foods, such as eggs, milk and sugar, for Lent.

Pancakes were a great way to use up supplies and so they became a meal in many countries on Pancake Tuesday.

Why do we still attempt to eat our weight in pancakes when we’re not so strict about what we give up? Because they’re really tasty and we’ll take any excuse to indulge in a tradition that encourages us to.
