What is Black Friday?

Black Friday is fast approaching, but how did this shopping phenomenon become such a prominent date in the retail calendar?

Taking place on the fourth Friday in November, Black Friday succeeds Thanksgiving in the United States. It is traditionally thought of as the first day of the Christmas shopping period marking the beginning of the biggest sale of the year, so those folks across the pond decided to go really, really big with it.

Shops all over the nation have been opening early on this date for decades, with some now even kicking off the sales on Thanksgiving. We’ve all seen the reports of massive crowds gathering outside the shutters, drawn by the incredible deals inside.

In more recent years, the practice has made its way from America to Europe. The name might not have any ties to Thanksgiving here, but many shops are using it as a welcome reason to throw open their doors and entice customers in with some early Christmas sales.

Harvey Norman is getting in on the action too, following on from hugely successful Black Friday sales over the last few years.
