You don’t need a Facebook account anymore to use Facebook Messenger

If needing a Facebook account was the only thing keeping you from using Facebook Messenger, you’ll be glad to hear that Facebook has relaxed that particular requirement.

Facebook has changed the sign up process, so all you need is a phone number and a picture. When you download and launch the app, you can select the “Not on Facebook” option to sign up using your phone number.

Facebook Messenger lets you chat with friends and family once you’re on Wi-Fi or using data for free. It doesn’t just apply to Facebook friends either; you can enter a number manually to add a new contact.

It’s always good to have options when it comes to a messaging app, though we imagine the Facebook account requirement didn’t affect too many people. Instead, many people are likely hoping that Facebook will remove the need to use Facebook Messenger to check their private messages on the social service. But that’s unlikely to change any time soon.

Facebook Messenger is available to download for free from the App Store or Google Play.
