Meltdown and Spectre: The Two Most Dangerous Computer Viruses Yet

Last week saw the discovery of two very dangerous computer viruses which experts believe can infect almost all of the computers and smartphones in the world.

Named Meltdown and Spectre, these viruses enable attackers to hijack a computer and remotely control it without the owner ever knowing.

Specifically, the attacker could view your computer activities and access personal and private information such as credit card and bank account details.

Meltdown can affect computers fitted with Intel chips, including laptops and working machines, while Spectre targets computers, smartphones and tablets that feature computer chips from manufacturers AMD and ARM, plus computer chips from other manufacturers.

Older Android and iPhone models are more vulnerable to Spectre than newer handsets, with ARM identifying the iPhone 4, 4S and 5 as most at risk.

There’s been no reports of damage caused by either of the two viruses so far, but researchers believe that an attack could occur at any point in the near future.

Thankfully, there are a couple of things you can do to protect your tech against the Meltdown and Spectre viruses.

Firstly, make sure your computer, laptop, smartphone and tablet are updated to the latest manufacturer patch and download and install any new protective patches.

Both Microsoft and Apple have stated that they will be rolling out such patches over the coming days.

Attackers are constantly creating new types of malware which is why regular PC maintenance is so important in this day and age, as it is the only way to ensure that your tech is fully protected against potential threats.

One of the easiest and quickest ways to make sure your tech is up-to-date and completely bug-free is by taking it to the LoveTech department at your local Harvey Norman store.

Lovetech is the services department for the Harvey Norman computer division and the team can help you with everything from the initial set-up to a full hardware repair.
